The touching story of Laika, the dog sent into space to orbit the Earth with no way of returning home, has recently sparked reactions online.
Laika was just one of many animals used in exploration, in an effort to better understand the universe. She left Earth at great speed as the sole passenger aboard the spacecraft Sputnik 2.
On November 3, 1957, after weeks of preparation that included adapting her to increasingly smaller cages and containers, she was sent into low Earth orbit. The experiment aimed to demonstrate that a living being could withstand the intense forces associated with launch and space travel.
Laika’s vital signs were carefully monitored, with the hope of confirming scientists’ theories that life could function in space despite reduced gravity and higher radiation levels. The data showed signs of stress throughout the journey.
More than five months after launch, Sputnik 2 re-entered Earth’s atmosphere on April 14, 1958, where it burned up during re-entry. From this mission, researchers gained valuable new information about the physiological effects of space travel through their work with Laika.
At the time, there were conflicting reports about what happened to her. Some early claims suggested she survived only a few hours after launch. However, later information revealed that Laika passed away during the mission due to overheating inside the spacecraft.
Her story remains one of the most emotional and memorable chapters in the history of space exploration.
